A Slow Accumulation of Gestures, Sawtooth ARI Gallery

2019

‘A Slow Accumulation of Gestures’ is a series of works on paper that explore how the medium of drawing has the capacity to express the actions and movements of the artist. Each gesture within a drawing, whether intentional or random, can act as a record of an artist’s physical processes and gestures. Through a series of drawings, I aim to capture the fluctuation between intentionality and chance that occurs in the process of constructing an abstract composition.

This series includes drawings created during the past six months, with some works created over a few days, weeks or sometimes multiple months. Each work explores the process of constructing compositions through accumulating layers of intuitive and spontaneous gestures. I explore processes such as creating large drawings on the floor of my studio, sitting and standing on the paper as I draw in pastel and watercolour. Other drawings are constructed first intuitively with my left hand, before carefully filling in abstract details with my right.
